First Look at New York Beer Company
brewyork: Just a block from Times Square, you’d expect to find some sort of tourist-trap bar where you’re going to get slammed with an $8 Bud Light. We all breathed a sigh of relief when we realized New York Beer Company (321 W. 44th St., at 8th Ave., Midtown West) isn’t one of those places. While it’s not a temple to high-end, rare beers, it’s an excellent option for a good, local craft...

Mugs Alehouse announces beer lineup for Split Thy...
brewyork: For years (13, to be exact), Mugs Alehouse (125 Bedford Ave., at N. 11th St., Williamsburg) has celebrated big, rare beers in an annual event called Split Thy Skull. Each year, the organizers of this two-day event bring together a draft list that is quite possibly the best to be found at any New York beer bar on any day of the year. This year is no different. On Saturday, March...

Why you can't get that beer here
brewyork: Sorry, folks. You can search up and down the island of Manhattan to find beers from these brewers, but you won’t find them. It happens on an almost daily basis to beer store and bar owners all over New York. The questions that, to the industry insider, have an obvious answer. But to those unaccustomed to how the beer industry functions, the questions are fast and furious and...

The writing is pedantic, self-aggrandizing, and cronyistic. Pretty damn annoying. But the ideas and guidance on the psychology of communication, especially in associations and business, is fascinating as well as practical. I’ve stumbled on some of the methods myself in the past. Others I’m only starting to put to use. In any case, this stuff works. Recommended.

I don’t tend to agree with Haque’s rhetoric or his philosophical positions, but as usual, he makes good points that stand on their own and points at things that should be paid attention. There’s something to these ideas: permission to operate in a community, profit being necessary but not sufficient measure of business value, adopting a model of value but refusing to change...
